Eighteenth-century Iceland. A pictorial record from the Banks and Stanley expeditions.
Iceland in the 18th Century is an art book with old pictures of Iceland. They are all from two scientific expeditions that left Britain in the 18th century - Banks's expedition in 1772 and Stanley's expedition in 1789. Most of these pictures are new for the first time, printed directly from the original pictures. Some have never before appeared in any book. These old pictures of Iceland are remarkable works of art. But they are also invaluable sources of a long-gone era, which rises vividly from the pages of the book. Frank Ponzi, an art historian, has had the whole process and trouble of the book and writes a foreword about these two Icelandic expeditions and the artists who made the pictures.
