Iceland in sight. French photographers in Iceland 1845-1900 - Islande en vue. Photographes français en Islande. Compiled by Æsa Sigurjónsdóttir.
The book is published in connection with the exhibition Iceland through the eyes of the French, which was organized by the National Museum of Iceland, Hafnarborg and Reykjavík - European Capital of Culture in 2000.
This magnificent book features the first photographs taken in Iceland that uniquely show a vanished world of the past: People at work, their homes and famous people of the time. Text and images come together to create an exciting story. The author, Æsa Sigurjónsdóttir, has a diverse background in history and art history. She has been searching for prisoners in archives and institutions in France in recent years. The book is in Icelandic and French and is published in collaboration with the National Museum of Iceland, but the photos were shown in Hafnarborg last summer. The book has received excellent reception and reviews, as "it is made with the utmost care" and "the photographs are made to be enjoyed as well as possible". (Mbl.) The book is "indispensable ..in the hands of anyone who cares about their origins" (Mbl.) and no less for all art lovers. (Bókatíðindi 2000).
