The unification of Iceland and Hitler's Germany was on the agenda of Heimrich Himmler, the head of the SS and the German police in Berlin in 1936. Himmler's envoy, SS officer Paul Burkert, traveled around Iceland and tried to ensnare local leaders. Among them was Prime Minister Hermann Jónasson. Himmler made a special appeal to Hermann and invited him to the Berlin Olympics. Meanwhile, he sent a reconnaissance mission to Iceland, consisting of SS officers and Gestapo officers, who later became known worldwide for mass murder, subversion and espionage. Plans were afoot for German heavy industry in Iceland, their settlement here and revolutionary training for Icelandic Nazis by the SS. (Cover text).
