Stanley's Icelandic expedition was the second in a series of English expeditions to Iceland and a direct continuation of Sir Joseph Banks's expedition in 1772. The Stanley expedition arrived here in the wake of the Móðuhardðindan, but no other descriptions by foreigners exist from those years. Diaries can tell us a lot about the state of the nation and fill in the gaps of that period.
This travelogue is adorned with about one hundred black-and-white drawings, twenty-one watercolors, and two oil paintings. Most of these images have been published in print before and are of great cultural and historical value. It can truly be said that they fill the gap between Eggert and Bjarni's Travelogue and MacKenzie's and Gaimard's books. (Cover text).
