The history of house building in Iceland is traced through time. Hundreds of photographs and drawings of reconstructed houses and house parts adorn the books.
In the first volume, the author attempts to trace our house-building history in abstract form over a period of two centuries. The former time frame is based on the age of the oldest houses in Iceland, while the latter dates back to the occupation of Iceland in 1940, which broke with the centuries-old Danish visual art tradition. The content of the book is largely divided according to the building material of the houses, and is not presented in a continuous chronological order, as each section follows that law. In the second volume, the history of the preservation of this tradition is explained, examining how it has suffered and what can be done to improve what has deteriorated.
Hörður Ágústsson is a nationally renowned painter, designer and influential art teacher. In recent decades, he has devoted himself almost exclusively to research into Icelandic architectural history and has received numerous awards, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Iceland.
