A total of fourteen authors contribute to the work, many of whom are the nation's most respected art historians. The work places special emphasis on the characteristics of Icelandic art in each period, its historical context and its relationship to international art history. The work contains color photographs of over a thousand works of art. "A magnificent work that is both educational and interesting and will be of use to both the layman and the learned. Here, a milestone has been raised in bringing Icelandic art to the nation." Katrín Jakobsdóttir, Minister of Education and Culture. (Bókatíðindi 2011).
