In the preface to the first volume, Björn Th. says this. "Few are clearer than the author of this book about the subject matter from which it is compiled. When art histories are written abroad, there is always a complete survey of the works of individual artists, so that the author of the anthology has largely selected and tested material at hand. In this country, there is nothing like this. There are few special historical works about Icelandic artists; even the pioneers of Icelandic art in this century have not been given any such treatment. There is no art historical reference collection anywhere, not even a collection of photographs, and even less a collection of exhibition catalogues, but these are as much neglected as they are valuable sources. This book has indeed consulted all available primary sources, in addition to the works of art themselves, in newspapers, magazines, books, exhibition catalogues and letters, but where these have been exhausted, it has often been necessary to rely on the memory of the artists themselves or to try to find the right information from others. "However, there is a risk that there may be gaps or errors in this material. This is the first attempt at a historical overview of Icelandic art, and like all original works, it will be of many benefits. I must submit my conclusions and artistic assessment to the judgment of time."
