Contemporary Icelandic poetry. The chief poet of the budget. By Árni Jakobsson.
Árni Jakobsson discusses here the distribution of artist salaries, and in particular Jón Trausta. Árni says, among other things. "There are both great poets and small poets among all nations. The same among us. Everyone knows this.
The former more often distinguish themselves by not writing an overwhelming number of books, but by producing them in such a way that they bear witness to the utmost diligence of those who devote their heart and soul to the art.
Our nation has produced relatively many such poets.
But again, the latter are characterized by writing a lot and without any diligence. They have continued to write books - sometimes at the expense of the public - when they are not really great poets. And in this category, I believe without hesitation that Jón Trausti belongs."
And in his concluding remarks, Árni challenges the budget authority and says: "The budget authority must support Icelandic poetry, more than is currently being done, but it must not be as perverse as has now occurred in our legislation. It must nurture substantial poets when they come forward with our nation, otherwise they will flee - they will be forced to do so, but if this continues as it has been recently, with Icelandic exports, on the one hand, and J. Tr. on the other, then there is no doubt that the path of our literature lies downhill."
