Sléttunga I-III. A collection on the history of the Melrakkaslétta Plain. Compiled by Níels Árni Lund.

Many people make their way through Melrakkasléttu and admire the land and nature, but they miss the story that is in danger of being lost. Sléttunga is intended to prevent this. It is a living story; knowledge mixed with stories and legends.

* Volume I describes the historical context; it explores stories and legends and other information. Experts and enthusiasts write about nature, health and education issues, the coast and the diverse cultural life.

* Volume II traces the history of all the farms on the Plain over a period of two centuries, from around 1800 until the 21st century; telling of the inhabitants and the daily lives of the people.

* Volume III is the history of Raufarhafn – the farm, the trading post and the fishing village, from the time the place was first mentioned until this century.

There are over 1000 photographs in Sléttunga. Most are related to the subject, but many are independent of place and time; they describe the diverse world of adventure that Sléttan is. Unique maps of Melrakkaslétta are included in the book – with around 1000 place names that are located for the first time by those who know them best; invaluable information is thus saved. Sléttunga is welcome to those who love national lore, nature and the history of the country.

Níels Árni Lund, born in 1950, is a teacher by training and was a teacher and school principal for ten years. Since 1987, he has worked in the Icelandic Government, in the ministry responsible for agricultural affairs, most of the time as an office manager.

Níels Árni is from Miðtún on Melrakkaslétta and he knows the north well – the history, people and places. In 1996 he published the book Leiftur frá liðnum íramar – a compilation of the manuscripts of his grandfather, Kristin Kristjánsson, a farmer and blacksmith in Nýhöfn, and in 2005 Níels Árni published the book Af heimaslóðum – the story of his parents and the community at Leirhöfn.
