The Little Boy. A play in five acts by Freymóð Jóhannsson.

Áslaug: - Bad? What do you mean by that?

Einar: - I was thinking about -- hm. The point was actually that, here --- You're unmarried -- of course.

Áslaug: - Yes --- it's me.

Einar: - Hm. -- Well, then I thought of asking you about it, sort of bordering on it, whether you wouldn't be willing to, hm -- get married?

Áslaug: - I don't expect to get married anytime soon.

Einar: - (Stands up and walks around the floor. Suddenly turns to Áslaug). Not even if I lay my heart, myself, all my future and prospects humbly at your feet (kneels) and beg you to grant me the honor of becoming -- my wife. (Grabs Áslaug's hand). I will see to it that you never have to dip your hand in cold water.

Áslaug: - (Stands up) Let's not waste any more words on this, Einar. -- I can't be your wife.

Einar: - Exactly, -- I naturally expected that. -- But -- Hm -- could I -- hear the reason.

Áslaug: - I love another man and therefore cannot love you.

Einar: - (after reflection) No, there is no hope. - Now - then I can go. -- Hm. - But if the young lady were to -- not marry that man. Here -- could I then have any hope? - I can wait a few years, if you like.

Áslaug: - I give you no hope, because I can never become your wife.

Einar: - Hm -- exactly that.

Áslaug: - Can I offer you a cup of coffee?
