Slices - not of cheese. (Umhendur II). Poem by Hallberg Hallmundsson.
Hallberg was Valdimar Jóhannsson's first employee at the Iðunni publishing house, where he proofread, translated children's books, and designed book covers from 1956 to 1960. At the age of thirty, Hallberg moved to New York with his American wife, where he worked as an encyclopedia editor from 1961 to 1982 and later at Business Week from 1984 to 2001.
In 2002, Hallberg moved back to Iceland and wrote reviews of Icelandic books for World Literature Today and was one of its advisors on the selection of books for review. Hallberg has also been involved in translation work, both from and into Icelandic, ever since he moved abroad. Hallberg has written many articles, long and short, in English on Icelandic and Nordic issues, as well as a number of articles on literary and historical topics.
Fifteen books of poetry by Hallberg and two collections of short stories have been published in Iceland; he also edited An Anthology of Scandinavian Literature (1966) and Icelandic Folk and Fairy Tales (1987). His translations into Icelandic number around fifty. (www.forlagid.is)
