The Tales of the Military Physician are one of the great works of world literature. In one place, it tells the story of the Swedes and Finns over a period of two centuries, or from the time Gustavus Adolphus came to power until the reign of Gustavus the Third. To quote the translator Matthías, they form "a woven series of stories with one and the same framework and as if with one and the same red thread in the middle of the web. ...The first volume has the title: "Gustav Adolphus and the Thirty Years' War"; and the first chapter of that story is called "The Ring of the King's Bull". This ring is the red thread in the web. The author has very ingeniously woven together the Finns' belief in fate and destiny with the natural logic of events - woven together the ingrained superstitious ideas of the nation and the time, and the true history of real life, so that spells and fateful judgments seem to coincide with the arguments of autonomy and correct actions, so that one can hardly see between what is natural and what is due to magic. But although an ignorant reader finds the circle fateful and incredibly magnificent, he will usually eventually understand that what determines the results and choices of people are not magical forces from outside, but the natural "course of events", people's words, nature and actions.
