Sun Poems. Published and reviewed by Njörður P. Njarðvík. Edited by Davíð Erlingsson, Njörður P. Njarðvík.
Sólarljóð are Catholic sacred poems by an unknown author in the 13th century and seem to have been little or unknown for a long time. They are not mentioned in written sources until the 17th century, and the oldest preserved manuscripts date from the same period.
Sólarljóð is one of the greatest religious poems ever written in the Icelandic language. It simultaneously expresses a Catholic worldview and guidance about that world. He who knew the poem and adopted its message was supposed to find his way through the maze of life, was supposed to know how to die, and was supposed to have gained sufficient insight into the existence beyond death to be able to continue there until the eternal salvation of the soul because of the Savior's promise of salvation.
