Bjarni Gissurarson 1621 – 1712 was a poet and priest in Þingmúli in Skriðdalur, his birthplace. His parents were Gissur Gíslason, priest at Þingmúli, and his wife, Guðrún, daughter of Einar Sigurðsson in Eydálar. A student at Skálholt School in 1643, he was then in the service of Bishop Brynjólfr Sveinsson until he received Þingmúli in 1647.
He served as a priest in Þingmúli until 1702, then at Hallormsstaður from 1702-1703, after the death of his son-in-law Þorleif Guðmundsson. He then spent some time with his daughter at Stóra-Sandfell, but then returned to Hallormsstaður to his son Eiríkur, who was then appointed priest there, and it was there that Bjarni died.
Bjarni was an intelligent, cheerful and humorous man. He is one of the leading poets of his time and very prolific, writing religious poems and secular poems of various kinds, especially satires, humorous poems and poetic epistles, as well as weekly poems. There are a number of poems by him in manuscripts. Jón Samsonarson, a manuscript scholar and expert at the Árna Institute, published a selection of his poems in 1960 under the title Sólarsýn with an essay on the poet. Bjarni is one of the East Icelandic poets.
Bjarni's wife was Ingibjörg, daughter of Árni Þorvarðarson, priest in Vallanes.
