Ulla Olin was born in 1920 and grew up in Espoo socken west of Helsingfors. The father was a farmer. From the age of eight she went to school in Helsingfors and studied at Zilliacuska school. In 1944 she became a Ph.D. at Helsingfors University; then followed lic.studier i nordiska språk 1946-47 at Lund University. She got married in 1948 and settled in Nässjö in 1949, where she was a teacher at Sörängens Folkhögskola in literature, Swedish and art until 1985; after 1975 also in film studies, drama and creative Swedish.
