A poem by Jóhannes from Kötlar.
The poem is written in an atmosphere of bitter feelings due to Iceland's entry into NATO in 1949, the military base agreement with the United States, and the arrival of American troops in Iceland in 1951. The poem tells of Sóleyja the Fair-haired and her struggle to awaken the people and spirits of Iceland to their deeds against the shadowy forces of war and warfare, which have pricked her knight, the scoundrel, with a sleeping thorn so that she cannot wake him. The poet weaves themes from folk poems and tunes from earlier times into the poems, and in addition there are countless references to historical events in the present and poisonous political messages.
As a new copy, unbound and uncut.
