Sóleyjarkveði by Jóhannes úr Kötlam was first published in book form in 1952. The poem was written in an atmosphere of painful emotions due to Iceland's entry into NATO in 1949, the military bases agreement with the United States, and the arrival of American troops in Iceland in 1951. The poem tells of Sóleyjar the Sun-Beauty and her struggle to try to awaken the people and spirits of Iceland to their deeds against the shadowy forces of weapons and warfare, which have pricked her knight, the sly one, with a sleeping thorn so that she cannot wake him. The poet weaves themes from folk poems and tunes from earlier times into the poems, and in addition there are countless references to historical events in the present day and poisonous political messages.
