Sólstafir. Poem by Guðmundur Ingi Kristjánsson.
Guðmundur Ingi Kristjánsson was born at Kirkjuból in Bjarnardalur in Önundarfjörður on January 15, 1907.
Guðmundur Ingi grew up in Kirkjuból and was a resident there all his life. He studied at the senior department of the People's College in Laugar 1929-1930 and at the senior department of the Cooperative School in Reykjavík 1931-1932, but was otherwise self-educated. At a young age he began to get involved in various social issues within and outside the village and continued to do so as long as his health permitted. He was on the board of the youth association Bifröst in Mosvallahreppur 1922-1937 and 1938-1942, and secretary of the District Association of Youth Associations of the Westfjords 1932-1951. He sat on the board of the Önfjörður Commercial Association 1935-1937 and 1938-1978. He was on the board of the Mosvallahrhepp Farming Association from 1927 to 1947, and was chairman of the Westfjords Farming Association from 1947 to 1983. He was a representative at the meetings of the Farmers' Union from its founding in 1945, and a board member there from 1970 to 1986. He served on the Mosvallahrhepp district committee from 1938 to 1956 and 1952 to 1982, of which he was chairman continuously from 1956. He was a member of the county committee from 1954 to 1986. He also served on the district school committee for a long time, and also on the school committee of the district school in Núpur. His main occupation was farming, but he did not formally take over the farm at Kirkjuból until 1944; until then, his mother was considered the manager of the farm. Alongside farming, he taught children in the district, intermittently from 1927 to 1946, but continuously from 1954 to 1974. From 1955 he was principal of the primary school in Holt. He was also somewhat involved in politics and was a candidate for the Althing three times for the Progressive Party: in two elections in 1942 in Ísafjörður, and in 1946 in Vestur-Ísafjörður County. Around 1960 he also took some part in the work of the military base opposition organization.
Guðmundur Ingi published five books of poetry under the titles: Sólstafir 1938, Sólbráð 1945, Sóldögg 1958, Sólborgir 1963 and Sólfar 1981. The poems from all these books were republished in the anthology Sóldagar 1993, which also contains an appendix with younger poems. In addition, a number of poems and free verse, articles and stories have appeared in newspapers, magazines and anthologies.
Guðmundur Ingi was awarded the Knight's Cross in 1984 and was an honorary citizen of Mosvallahrepp and later of Ísafjarðarbær.
