The Spanish Civil War of 1615. A true account by the learned Jón Guðmundsson.
A four-language edition of the True Account of the Spanish Civil War of 1615 by Jón Guðmundsson the Learned is being published to mark the 400th anniversary of these events. Icelandic texts from two manuscripts are published in their entirety, along with the Súðavíkurdóm and a letter of appeal, and in addition, the True Account has now been translated for the first time into English, Spanish and Basque. Már Jónsson wrote the introduction and prepared the printing.
On the night of September 21, 1615, three whaling ships from the Gipuzkoa region of Spain were wrecked in Reykjarfjörður, about the time of their expected departure. 83 crew members survived, but 31 of them were killed in the following days. Jón Guðmundsson lærði was a self-taught scholar and naturalist, painter and poet, and considered a sorcerer. He recounted these events and was subsequently sentenced to exile. His account is being published in four languages to mark the 400th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War in 2015.
