A trail of footsteps. A story of unique events and interesting people. Recorded by Bragi Þórðarson.
Bragi Þórðarson's books about Icelandic folk life in the past have enjoyed great popularity. Sporaslóð contains a collection of stories about events and people who left their mark on folk life in the past. The book's content is diverse: A poor girl from the peninsula became one of the first women to join the Salvation Army. Gvendur in Halakot was a notorious drunkard, but a sought-after sailor because of his bravery and diligence. The lighthouse keeper on Breiðinn was a popular storyteller who wrote with great skill. Bjarni Ólafsson was a successful captain, but drowned along with several of his crew. They were unsinkable, and in their memory, Bjarnalaug was built to promote swimming lessons. The cat on Hraunsnefi was considered so good at making promises that he became the wealthiest cat ever. It tells of the interactions between Icelandic fishermen on rowboats and British trawlers who plundered the fishing grounds. It tells the story of Icelandic sailors who risked their lives in extreme weather to rescue the crew of the French research vessel Pourquoi pas? (Book Magazine 2009).
