The Loves of a Harmonious Couple. (Twelve Related Scenes). A novel by Guðberg Bergsson.
By then, Sveinn and Katrín's marriage had lasted unbroken, with a few harmless deviations, for almost a quarter of a century. Around and after the wedding, physical lust bound them together, then its consequence: the children. But in their early forties, the couple had little in common other than a house and a small bank deposit, which hid the sexual fatigue of both. She said to him in the evenings: God knows I would have given up on this hell long ago, if it hadn't all been for the children's slow upbringing. He didn't answer, but thought: if I move a hand or foot, my house and deposit are lost. For these reasons, Sveinn chose to put up with Katrín's unbearable habit of sneaking out of the house whenever she felt like it.
