Passion was Jeanette Winterson's second novel, published in the UK in 1987. Two years earlier, Winterson had attracted much attention for her first novel, Oranges are not the only fruit. For it, Winterson received the Withbread Award and was made into a television series starring Geraldine McEvan, which won the BAFTA Award for Best Novel in 1991. The story is based on the life of Jeanette Winterson herself, who was adopted in the first year of her life by the Wintersons, who were active members of the Pentecostal church. When the young Jeanette admitted to herself and others that she was a lesbian, she and the church, and thus also her parents, broke up.
