In 2006, 150 years had passed since the birth of Jónas Jónsson, a priest and scholar who identified himself with Hrafnagil in Eyjafjörður, and this was commemorated in various ways. Reverend Jónas was productive in many areas of cultural life and had been involved in many areas before he turned to collecting Icelandic folk customs. He was a constant reader and writer, as well as being a priest in a large parish, a provost, a teacher at the Akureyri Secondary School and an editor. Printed here are four of Jónas's own essays on ethnographic issues, which were first published between 1908 and 1915, lectures given about Reverend Jónas in the year of his birthday and his bibliography. The articles give a good picture of the ethnographer, theologian and writer Reverend Jónas Jónsson from Hrafnagil, who is best known for his pioneering work on Icelandic folk customs.
