The Svaðastaðahrossin. Origin and history. By Anders Hansen.
The Svaðastaði stock is by far the most widespread stock within the Icelandic horse breed, and horses from its various lineages are at the forefront of horse shows everywhere. Suffice it to point out the Kolkuós and Kirkjubæjar horses, and Sveinn Guðmundsson's horses at Sauðárkrókur.
The book traces the history of the Svaðastaði horses back to the mid-18th century, when Björn Sigfússon moved to Svaðastaðir in the Viðvíkursveit region of Skagafjörður. The same family still lives in Svaðastaðir and has bred the same breed of horse for more than 200 years. This has resulted in the fact that all of the country's prestigious stallions are from this stock, as well as many of the most famous horses in the ranks of Icelandic horses. It is enough to mention names such as Brján frá Hólar, Kristal frá Kolkuósi and Þór frá Sporz.
