This book is named after the town of Svalvogar, which stands at the far end of the peninsula between Dýrafjörður and Arnarfjörður. The author of the main chapter of the book, Ottó Þorvaldsson, moved to Svalvogar with his parents as a child, grew up there and then ran a farm there for decades with his wife Magnea Símonardóttir. Here he tells of household circumstances, farming methods and the struggle for life in a large family on the peninsula in the first half of the twentieth century. Where else there are ups and downs, joy and sorrow in close community and mutual help between neighbors in a remote settlement. It tells of earning a living on sea and land, journeys over rough terrain on land and sea expeditions in mild weather and war. Images from a bygone era in a unique settlement are evoked.
