Günther Prien and his crew of the submarine U47 inspired fear and horror among the seafarers of World War II. In the early days of the war, they sank a British battleship with incredible audacity in the ancient scene of Icelandic legends; Skalpaflói in the Orkneys north of Scotland. It was the flagship Royal Oak – the Royal Oak itself. The eyes of the maritime nations were opened to the submarine threat. Prien was nicknamed “The Tarfurinn frá Skalpaflói”. In Iceland, fear of German submarines reigned. This was clearly seen when Hvalfjörður became a naval base after the occupation of Iceland in 1940. U47 ravaged the shipping lanes south of the country. The first Icelandic people to die as a result of a submarine attack were the victims of Prien and his companions. They left behind a bloody trail of death for thousands of sailors. But in Germany they were national heroes.
