Steinþór Sigurðsson was born on January 11, 1904. He died in an accident on November 2, 1947, while taking photos of the 1947 Hekla eruption when a glowing lava column erupted from a lava waterfall.
Steinþór was one of the main pioneers in research on the Hekla eruption and was filming the lava when the accident occurred. Steinþór studied science in Copenhagen and graduated in 1929 with astronomy as his major. He was a teacher at the Akureyri High School until 1935 and at the Reykjavík High School until 1938, then principal of the Iceland Business School until it was merged with the Faculty of Business of the University of Iceland in 1941, and director of the Icelandic Research Council from its establishment in 1939 until his death in 1947. In the summers of 1930-38, Steinþór conducted land surveys in the Icelandic highlands with the Danish Land Survey and then, with assistants, mapped the area from Hofsjökull east and south to Hornafjörður. Steinþór taught physics and mathematics as a part-time teacher at the National Institute of Geodesy and the newly established Faculty of Engineering of the University of Iceland until his death. As Director of the Research Council, he pioneered drilling for geothermal energy and other practical natural research, as well as research on Grímsvötn and Katla, and finally Hekla.
