The outdoor exhibitions at Skólavörðuholit 1967-1972 were the most important exhibitions of sculpture held in a public space in Iceland and they caused a change in the trend in three-dimensional art. There were five exhibitions in total and they were held at the initiative of the Reykjavík School of Fine Arts. More than forty artists aged 17 - 75 participated and around 130 works were shown. An older generation of renowned artists, young radical artists, art students and amateurs exhibited side by side, works that spanned a wide range of methodologies, content and materials. The spirit and ideals of the 1968 generation soared over the waters - collaboration, optimism, creativity, a sense of freedom of expression and critical thinking, but also a strong will to make art more visible in the cityscape and reach the public.
This book traces the history of the exhibitions, but also discusses their prehistory and the history of the Reykjavík School of Fine Arts. The book contains numerous images of the artworks at Skólavörðuholt, some of which have never been published before and are an invaluable source, as many of the works have been lost, as some are made of perishable materials.
The authors of the main text are Inga S. Ragnarsdóttir, artist, and Kristín G. Guðnadóttir, art historian. Markús Andrésson, head of exhibitions and communication at the Reykjavík Art Museum, also contributed to the book, and Áslaug Thorlacius, principal of the Reykjavík School of Fine Arts, wrote an introduction.
