Saint-John Perse (1887 - 1973) is one of the leading French poets of the twentieth century. He was a high-ranking official in the French Foreign Ministry for a long time, but was dismissed from office and expelled from the country when the Germans attacked Paris in the spring of 1940. He then spent a long time in the United States, but lived in France for the last fifteen years of his life. He has six or seven books of poetry, and the category Exile is central to it. The poems were written in the United States between 1941 and 1944. The original text is printed here together with a translation by Sigfús Daðason. The book also includes an essay on the poet's life by the translator.
