Tómas was born at Kúhól in Landeyjar on June 7, 1807, the son of Sæmundur Ögmundsson, a merchant in Eyvindarholt, and Guðrún Jónsdóttir.
Sæmundur was the son of Reverend Ögmundur, of Kross, brother of Reverend Böðvar in Holtaþingar, father of Reverend Þorvaldur in Holt, ancestor of various cultural figures, such as Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, Matthías Johannessen and Gylfi Þ. Gíslason.
Tómas's wife was Sigríður Þórðardóttir, a sheriff in Garður Björnsson, and they had two children, Þórhildur, wife of Helgi Hálfdánarson, a lecturer, and Þórður, a district physician in Akureyri.
Tómas studied with Steingrímur Jónsson in Odda, later a bishop, graduated from Bessastaðaskóli in 1827, took his second master's degree at Hafnarháskóli, completed a degree in Hebrew in 1831 and a theology degree in 1832. He traveled through Southern Europe in 1832-34 and founded Fjölnir when he returned, together with Jónas Hallgrímsson, Brynjólfur Pétursson and Konráð Gíslason.
Tómas received Breiðabólstaður in Fljótshlíð in 1834, became provost of Rangárþing in 1836 and held Breiðabólstaður until his death. He was probably the most enthusiastic and realistic about Fjölnir, wrote extensively in the publication and criticized Konráð for fanaticism in spelling issues and Jónas for radicalism and harsh criticism of people.
Tómas is, along with Baldvin Einarsson, Jónas and Jón Sigurðsson, the nation's main patriotic and freedom hero of the 19th century. He was sorely missed when he died on 17.5. 1841.
