Turf churches in Iceland. Photographs, text and design by Björn G. Björnsson. Foreword by Margrét Hallgrímsdóttir, National Monuments Curator.
There are only five original turf churches still standing in Iceland, and the sixth is a reconstruction of an older church. They are among the most significant in Icelandic architecture: Víðimýrarkirkja in Skagafjörður, Grafarkirkja in Höfðaströnd, Saurbæjarkirkja in Eyjafjörður, Hofskirkja in Öræfi and Bænhúsið in Núpsstaður, as well as Árbæjarkirkja in Reykjavík. All of these places, and all of these buildings, are part of Icelandic cultural heritage and among the best and most significant that we have in this field.
