Bjarni was born in Gafl in Víðidalur on April 28, 1915. At the age of nine he was sent to foster care in Hof in Vatnsdalur and grew up there with the couple Ágústi Jónsson and his wife Ingunn. In 1940 he married Jónína Kristjánsdóttir from Blönduós and started farming at Kornsá in Vatnsdalur, lived there for two years but then moved to Blönduós. In 1952 the couple moved with their large group of children and started farming in Ölfus in Árnssýsla and they lived there for fourteen years until they moved to Selfoss and lived there ever since.
