Símon Dalaskáld, a poet and traveler in the 19th and 20th centuries. He was a Bjarnarson but early on took the pseudonym Dalaskáld and identified himself with Skagafjarðardalur (Vesturdalur and Austurdalur) where he had his home for most of his life, although he was a frequent traveler, but many people actually think because of his pseudonym that he originated in Dalasýsla.
He was born at Höskuldsstaðir in Blönduhlíð in Skagafjörður and was the eldest of 13 siblings. He left home soon after his confirmation and worked as a laborer in the Skagafjörður valleys, married and had children, all of whom died young except one, worked for a time on farms but was mostly in travel, traveling all over the country selling his writings and more. However, he was not a vagabond or a beggar, much more of an entertainer who traveled around and entertained people.
Símon was considered what is called a talking poet and often wrote as quickly as others speak fluently. It is believed that few Icelanders have written as many verses as Símon, because in addition to the rhymes he composed, he wrote verses about thousands of people all over the country. Although Símon had begun to publish poems with his rhymes and other poetry before he was thirty, he did not learn to write until he was fifty and never became a good writer. However, he published numerous collections of rhymes, two biographies - Bóla-Hjálmar's saga and the Saga of Eiríkur Magnússon (Mera-Eiríkur), and long after his death a novel he had written, Árni á Arnarfell og dætur hans, was published.
