Einar Ásmundsson was born in Vögla in Fnjóskadalur on 20 (church register, Einar considered himself born on 21) June 1828, died on 19 October 1893. His parents were Ásmundur Gíslason (born 8 April 1800, died 8 October 1876) later a farmer at Þverá in Dalsmynn and his 1st wife Guðrún Björnsdóttir (born 16 August 1795, died 20 February 1835) a housewife. Einar married in 1853 Margréti Guttormsdóttir (born 1 October 1822, died 19 December 1864) a housewife. Her parents were Guttormur Pálsson and his wife Margrét Vigfúsdóttir, sister of Guttormur Vigfússson, a member of parliament at Arnheiðarstaðir. Sister of Bergljót, wife of Sigurður Gunnarsson, member of the Althing. Einar's second wife was Elísabet Þorbjörg Sigurðardóttir (born 16 November 1842, died 24 August 1927), housewife. Parents: Sigurður Jónsson and his wife Ástríður Vernharðsdóttir. Einar and Margrét's sons were Gunnar (1853), Guttormur (1858). Einar's daughter was Valgerður, daughter of Elísabet and Kristján Jóhannsson (1861).
Einar studied goldsmithing from 1843 to 1847. He studied in Copenhagen from 1847 to 1848.
Engaged in teaching and other work in the Eastfjords 1849–1853. Farmed alongside his father at Þverá in Dalsmynn 1853–1855, farmer in Nes in Höfðahverfi from 1855 until the end of his life. Had a ship for shark fishing for a while and himself taught seamanship to the first shark captains. Appointed commissioner of Möðruvallaklaustur in 1882.
Member of Parliament for Eyfjord 1874–1885, Member of Parliament for South Þingeyri 1892–1893.
