Gunnar Dal was born on June 4, 1923 in Syðsta-Hvammur, Kirkjuhvammshrep, V-Húnavatnssýsla.
He graduated from Reykjavík High School in 1946.
He studied philosophy at the University of Edinburgh between 1950-51, at the University of Calcutta, India, between 1951-53, and at the University of Wisconsin, USA, between 1956-57.
He was also a teacher, including in philosophy and Icelandic until 1991.
Gunnar was on the board of the Icelandic Writers' Association and its chairman between 1985 and 1986. He received the Icelandic National Broadcasting Corporation's Literary Award in 1976.
