In Unuhús there is a magnificent depiction of the lives of poets and other clients of the mothers on Garðastræti.
"Of Joakim's drinking habits, it is true to say that he was constantly drunk 24 hours a day, while he stayed at Unuhús. Joakim was always on the go. He was a polite man and a womanizer. He called all the girls his darlings. Joakim suffered from gonorrhea. He complained bitterly about the disease, how persistent and dizzy it was. He must have contracted the gonorrhea from Una's maid, Friðbjörg by name. This Friðbjörg was bred from the east of the counties. But at that time she was a public prostitute in Reykjavík and the stable sister of Guddu Gróða. Friðbjörg will be mentioned in more detail later.
Joakim slept with Friðbjörg every night for the three weeks he was in Unuhús. For three days in a row he had to lie in bed because of the discharge. A doctor visited him then. Hendrik Erlendsson, a medical student, reminds me. He forbade Joakim from having anything to do with women. But Joakim valued the doctor's advice so much that he usually took his Friðbjörg up to him, after the medical examination. It happened several times that Una came to them in the den. She would then comfort Friðbjörg with words of sympathy and prayers, but told the rest of us that she had never known such a troublesome pig in her life. She usually ended her story this way: "This is the most pitiful thing. These are people to be pitied."
