Defenses and Protections. A Guide to Limiting Childbirth by Norman E. Heimes and Abraham Stone. With 24 illustrations.
How to test a condom.
Condoms are manufactured in so many different types and styles that it is essential to test them before use. It has been pointed out that just 10 years ago, every second condom manufactured in the United States was either torn, punctured, or otherwise defective. Therefore, it is very important to test the condom before use.
Among the simple tests that may be useful are:
1) The condom is rolled down and inflated as shown in Figure 12. (It should be inflated until it is approximately 15 cm long and 12 cm in diameter). It is then held up to a bright light (see Figure 12) and checked for holes or tears and generally for leaks.
2) Tobacco smoke is blown into the condom and checked to see if the smoke escapes through any slits or holes.
3) The condom is filled with water, dried thoroughly on the outside, and then checked for leaks.
