The Saga of Kormak
King Harald the Fair-haired ruled over Norway when this story happened. At that time there was a chieftain in the kingdom named Kormák, a Viking by birth, rich and of great lineage. He was the greatest warrior and had been with King Harald in many battles. He had a son named Ögmund. He was a most promising man, tall and strong from an early age. When he had reached the age and maturity he went on a Viking raid in the summers and was with the king in the winters. He acquired a good reputation and great wealth.
One summer he went to the west to fight. There was a man there named Ásmundur. He was the greatest warrior. He had defeated many Vikings and soldiers. Now they asked each other and words passed between them, and they met themselves and set up a place of battle and fought. Ásmundur had more troops and did not put all of them to battle. They fought for four days. Ásmundur's troops fell heavily, but he himself fled, but Ögmundur had the victory and came home with wealth and fame.
Kormák said that Ögmund would not achieve greater success in warfare, "and I will give you a wife, Helga, daughter of Earl Fróði."
"I want that," says Ögmund.
After that they made their journey to Earl Frodi. He received them well. They presented their message. The Earl took it well and called for some fear to be laid to rest about their share with Ásmund. But still these plans were made and they went home and a feast was expected and a great multitude came to that feast. Helga, the daughter of Earl Frodi, had a far-sighted nurse and she went with her.
This is what Ásmundur the Viking asks and goes to meet Ögmundur, offering him a duel. Ögmundur agrees.
