Vördandi was an Icelandic magazine published in Copenhagen in 1882 and is considered the beginning of realism in Iceland, based on its publication. Only one issue of the magazine was published, but it had a great influence on Icelandic literature.
The publishers of the magazine were four young intellectuals who were all or had been studying in Denmark. These were Gestur Pálsson, Einar H. Kvaran, Bertel Þorleifsson and Hannes Hafstein, who was the youngest of the four, just over twenty. Gestur and Einar published short stories in the magazine, while Hannes and Bertel published poems. Some of Hannes' poems that first appeared there became well-known, such as Stormur, Skarphéðinn í brennunni, Nei, smáfríð er hún ekki, Sprettur (Ég berst á fáki fráum) and Tár sem háir hólar, but from other material in the magazine Gest's short story, Kærleiksheimilið, is probably the best known.
There was no specific introduction or policy statement in the magazine, but it was immediately clear that a new trend was underway that had not been seen before in Icelandic literature. The four men were identified with the magazine and called Verðandimenn.
Here we have read and the harp of Verðandan. But that's how it is with good books, they are read again and again.
