In the warmth of memories. Oscar Clausen tells the story.
Oscar Clausen was born in Stykkishólmur in February 1887. His parents were Holgeir Peter Clausen, a merchant and member of the Althing for Snæfellsjö for a time, and his wife Guðrún Þorkelsdóttir, a housewife, the full sister of Dr. Jón Þorkelsson the Elder. Oscar grew up in Stykkishólmur until he was ten years old, when his parents moved to Reykjavík. He studied at the Lærði School for three winters, worked in commerce in Stykkishólmur, was a sailor, a merchant in Grundarfjörður and elsewhere. In 1949, Oscar moved to Reykjavík and lived there for most of his life, on the corner of Bankastræti and Ingólfsstræti, above the Prikið café.
Oscar was a prolific writer. He published 20 books, most of them about aspects of folk life in the past, including stories about Snæfellsnes and books about mystical phenomena, as he himself was influenced by mystical experiences and a rare gift.
Oscar founded the Icelandic Prisoner Assistance Association in early 1949 and has worked diligently ever since to improve the conditions and interests of prisoners in Iceland. Over the years, he is said to have taken in, guided and assisted as much as he could over two thousand young people who had received criminal sentences. His Prisoner Assistance Association and the Prisoner Assistance Association of the Guard, founded by Mrs. Þóra Einarsdóttir in 1960, also had a significant impact on the increase in the number of conditional prison sentences in this country.
Oscar died in April 1980.
