Viðeyjarklaustur. Draft of the history of Viðeyjar up to the Reformation. Compiled by Árni Óla.
In this book, Árni Óla tells the story of the monastery in Viðey and also the history of the island from the time of settlement to the Reformation. For about 300 years, Viðey was like a fairyland. A monastery was built there, which became one of the most active and richest monasteries in the country. There lived Styrmir Kárason the Wise, one of the original authors of Landnáma and other historical works. In Viðey, wonders (signs), miracles of their time, took place.
At the height of the island's power in 1539, Didrik Minden captured the island and plundered the monastery. This raid became the occasion for great events and massacres. The story of Viðeyjarklaustur is a significant contribution to Icelandic historical literature.
