Dragons and the roar of weapons. Hvalfjordur and Iceland's part in the Battle of the Atlantic. By Friðþór Eydal.
What was the role of Allied troops and bases in Iceland during World War II? Where were these bases and how were they and the country as a whole defended? What tactics did the Germans use against them and what were their activities here on the mainland? Why did German submarine commanders attack Icelandic ships that considered themselves neutral? These questions and many more are raised in the book.

In Hvalfjörður, the Americans built an oil storage facility for the British on loan and lease terms. The construction of the facility cost the equivalent of a quarter of Iceland's GDP in 1941.

Increased activity required protection against German bombers. Anti-aircraft guns were placed in several places in Hvalfjörður and elsewhere, and radar stations and fighter planes provided air defense. The first plane the US Army shot down in Europe was shot down near Grótta, and here they captured the first German airman they captured in the war.
There are a number of photographs in the book.
