Louis De Rougemont was an "explorer" who claimed to have traveled to Australasia.
He was born and raised in Switzerland, but left home at the age of 16. He tried his hand at various jobs, including being the personal valet to actress Fanny Kemble, a valet to a banker in Mieville, and a butler to the Governor of Western Australia, Sir William Robinson. He tried his hand at medicine, spirit photography, and as an inventor.
In 1898 he began writing about his adventures in The Wide World Magazine. There he recounted his incredible adventures and amazing experiences in dealing with the Australian Aborigines, with whom he said he had lived for 30 years and who had worshipped him as a god. Not many people believed Rougemont's stories and they sparked several controversies. His opponents, for example, said that it was impossible to ride a tortoise like a horse. And then the fact that it was impossible to find on maps where he had stayed greatly reduced the veracity of his story. He actually said that the Aborigines had made him promise not to give up their whereabouts, as the area was rich in gold. And then he refused to speak the language he had learned, which he said was for the same reason.
De Rougemont's travelogue is a mix of Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver's Travels, but with a touch of Munchkin. Great entertainment.
