When Guðjón R. Sigurðsson was two weeks old, in the spring of 1903, his parents moved to Canada, but he stayed with relatives in East Skaftafell County. At just over twenty, he set off west with nothing but anticipation in his suitcase. But his father and mother did not get along, farm work in the countryside did not suit Guðjón, and during the Depression years, when little work was available, he stayed out in the wilderness and fished and fished.
Guðjón's story is different from the stories of many other westerners. He never settled down and never started a family. For decades, he wandered the country, working as a hunter, laborer, carpenter, painter, and fisherman, often in dangerous conditions. He met countless memorable people and was a sought-after companion everywhere.
The Icelandic mountains drew Guðjón back home in the 1960s, and he began writing his memoirs. He was a great storyteller, and the dense, lively, and unadulterated text not only tells of an adventurous life, but sheds light on a man who has a subtle sense of humor about himself, goes his own way, is not afraid of bears or harsh nature, and faces the unknown with the fearlessness and optimism of a free man.
Þórður Sævar Jónsson prepared the memoirs of Guðjón R. Sigurðsson for publication and wrote the foreword. Þórður Sævar has a BA in Ancient Greek and an MA in Writing. He has published books of poetry and translations.
