The Biography of the Cod. The Fish That Changed the World. By Mark Kurlansky. Ólafur Hannibalsson Icelandic.
The author of the book, Mark Kurlansky, spent years at sea on fishing boats. He writes The Life of Cod from the perspective of fishermen on the Atlantic Ocean. A significant part of the book deals with Iceland and the author explains the significance of cod fishing here in Iceland from the time of settlement to the current state of affairs. He talks to fishermen, shipowners, scientists and politicians and manages to write a book that keeps the reader captivated and about cod itself he writes with rare knowledge and perspective. Because of cod, wars have been fought and revolutions have broken out. Entire nations have built their livelihoods and national rights on it, economies have risen and fallen, countries and seas have been explored. For example, the colonization of North America was based on the existence of cod. The author traces this story from the Basques' emergence from the mists of time nearly a thousand years ago with their great discovery, salting cod to ensure its shelf life and provide food to sustain people through the winter. He describes the Vikings who chased cod across the Atlantic, dried and cured it, and made a living from it on their voyages of exploration. He tells how cod, salted and cured, became the fish of the Catholic Church and is linked to the fate of Christianity and how it entered into a renewal of life with Clarence Birdseye, who built up the frozen cod industry after 1930.
