It is spring in a small town by the sea. Jobs are scarce and the young people dream of brighter times. But when war comes to town, the world war itself, everything changes. The streets are filled with foreign soldiers, bragging rights are raised, dancing is booming and the townspeople need passports to travel between neighborhoods. Out in the fjord lie warships and a threat looms: planes with bombs that no one knows where to drop.
Over the Farm at Home tells the story of an extended family in Seyðisfjörður, their neighbors and family friends. Ásta is fifteen years old when the war begins and excited about new things. Her sister Þrúða has young children and is under a lot of pressure in her job at the Telecommunication Station. Their mother Rúna takes everything calmly, but the father of the house, Snjólfur, is opposed to the army, even though they now have enough to bite and burn. Each generation reacts in its own way, and friendship and affection gradually develop between the locals and the newcomers – but the war, the danger to life and the turmoil in the town leave deep traces.
Kristín Steinsdóttir has a unique knack for creating believable and entertaining characters and writes with warmth and sensitivity about their fates and daily lives. Kristín is a hugely popular award-winning author and her books have received much praise at home and abroad.
