Over the Hill. Poem by Anna S. Björnsdóttir.
Anna Svanhildur Björnsdóttir was born in Reykjavík on November 30, 1948. Her parents were Hulda M. Kristjánsdóttir and Björn M. Björnsson. She grew up in the western suburbs of Reykjavík, the second-oldest of four siblings, but then the family moved to Laugarnes. Anna graduated from the Icelandic Teachers College in 1969 and then moved to Hólmavík for two years with her first husband, Ern Ásbjarnarson, and they had sons Ásbjörn Sírni Arnarson b. 19.9 1970 and Starkað Örn Arnarson b. 16.8.1972. Anna and Örn divorced and Anna moved with her son to Lýsuhól in Staðarsveit on Snæfellsnes for one winter. She then continued to work as a teacher in Reykjavík and in 1979 married Einar Aðalsteinsson from Akureyri b. 19.6.1941 – d. 9.7.1998. Their children are Sólveig Krista Einarsdóttir b. 14.2.1980 and Einar Hlér Einarsson b. 23.6.1982. Anna has taught elsewhere, including in Húsavík.
Anna was a columnist for Vikunn from 1992 to 1995. She began writing poetry and publishing in newspapers and magazines in 1985, and her first book of poetry, Öruggglega ég, was published in 1988. She has since published a number of books of poetry. She has held and participated in poetry festivals in Iceland and abroad, mostly in the Nordic countries. Many of her poems have been translated into Danish, Swedish and English. The book of poetry Mens solen stadig er fremme / While the sun is still up was published in Danish and Icelandic in 2003. Anna has attended writers' conferences abroad, received several awards, and has poems in numerous anthologies.
