The Judge. A play in five acts by Tómas Jónasson.
This is a photocopy of Tómas's manuscript. Finnur Sigmundsson writes about the author.
Tómas Jónasson was born on September 9, 1835, at Veturliðastaðir in Fnjóskadalur. Tómas lost his father in 1852, but his mother had died a few years earlier. Tómas worked as a freelancer in Fnjóskadalur, Bárðardalur and elsewhere in Eyjafjörður, but in 1867 he settled down and married Björga Emelía Þorsteinsdóttir from Hlíðarenda in Ljósavatnssøk. They settled at Hlíðarenda, but in the spring of 1874 they moved to Hróarsstaðir in Fnjóskadalur, where Tómas lived until the end of his life. He died of pneumonia in October 1883.
Tómas was early inclined to books, although he did not have the opportunity to attend school. There are fragments from his diaries and various memoirs from 1851 - 1883. They show that his mind was mainly directed towards academic studies and poetry. He was well-spoken and some of his poetry survives. Articles by him can be found in the Akureyrarblæðin, especially memoirs and heritage poems. However, his greatest interest was playwriting. He had, without any formal training, mastered English and Danish and could read plays in those languages. His book accounts show that he bought expensive dictionaries and various important foreign books. It is also clear that he had subscribed to works by Shakespeare.
There are four plays by Tómas. In the last third of the 19th century, there were quite a few plays in the rural areas of northern Iceland, especially in Eyjafjörður and Þingeyjarsýsla. Tómas' plays were well received and were performed widely. The Chief Justice must have been Tómas's play that achieved the greatest popularity and was performed widely, including after the turn of the century, around 1900.
