Thick Skin. Volume 1. Southern Folk Tales and Episodes. Compiled by Helgi Hannesson. Foreword by Þórður Tómasson in Skógar.
Thick Skin is a selection of stories and photographs by Helgi Hannesson from Sumarliðabær (1896 - 1989). Here, well-known ghosts of the Rangæingi region such as Kotsmór and Gunna Ívar are told, the hólbúr and hidden ghosts are introduced to the story, in addition to a number of Rangæingi from the past being brought to the fore. All of these characters, men and ghosts, come alive to the reader under Helgi's chiseled language and excellent narrative style. The book contains around 170 photographs that Helgi took around and before the middle of the 20th century and shed unique light on the bygone era. In photography, Helgi was ahead of his time as he made a point of capturing the everyday life of the Rangæingi. Stories and images are interwoven here, in addition to many individual images adorning the book between chapters. The foreword is written by Þórður Tómasson, curator at Skógar. (Bókatíðindi 2003).
